Trying Pink Champagne Cake at Madonna Inn

Join me as I travel to Madonna Inn to try their famous pink champagne cake. I’m Allison with Simple Fantastic Kitchen. This is my “On The Road” series where I travel to new places and explore their culture, sites, traditions, and especially their food! And today, we’ll explore the Madonna Inn, located in beautiful San Luis Obispo, California! You can watch my detailed video below or read on for the full experience!

Madonna Inn Theme Rooms

The Madonna Inn has one hundred and ten uniquely themed guest rooms, a beautiful spa and pool, and of course, world class dining. From its magical pink steakhouse to its cafe and pastry shop, that puts pink sugar on every table, the Madonna Inn is the perfect blend of fun kitsch and absolute luxury. Even their bathrooms are amazing, ornate and very pink!

I’ve stayed at the Madonna Inn three times, each time in a different one of their theme rooms! First, I stayed in the Cinderella Room (they have since changed the name). It was a suite and was absolutely magical. Then I stayed in the Highway Room, which is smaller but has a lovely fireplace. And finally, the Kona Rock room, which is more of a suite.

My Mom joined us for that last visit, and she stayed in the Mount Vernon room.

The Mount Vernon room is wheelchair accessible. She’s not in a wheelchair, but an accessible bathroom (especially the shower) is very helpful to her in her time of life and I’m so glad it’s something they provide.

At Madonna Inn’s Spa, Mom had a facial and my husband and I had massages. Mom enjoyed her time by the pool, where they have a menu including drinks (Mom got a frozen daquiri). It’s called the “Terrace Pool Bar”. Mom really enjoyed her cocktail and her poolside experience as you can see here!

We perused the gift shop where I bought this adorable T-shirt (how could I not buy it in Madonna Inn “Pink”?!)

They have so many items in the gift shop, it was really fun to look and window shop.

Madonna Inn Restaurants

We had breakfast at their coffee shop (which also houses their pastry shop/bakery) and is called “Madonna Inn Copper Cafe”.

We had appetizers and drinks at their bar, called the “Silver Bar Cocktail Lounge”. I just realized, their restaurant names comprise “Copper, Silver, and Gold!”.

We had a cheese platter, shrimp cocktail and I even ordered a fancy grilled cheese sandwich which was delivered from the coffee shop directly to the bar!

Mom had a fancy Bloody Mary (she loves to sample Bloody Marys wherever she goes!) and I had a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon. Both paired very well with our food choices! The bar was packed by the time we finished and it was a really fun atmosphere!

Madonna Inn Bar Food

We opted for a bar experience that time, but next time we go, I will have to try their full course dining experience in “Alex Madonna’s Gold Rush Steak House”.

Madonna Inn Dining Room

This time around I’m only staying long enough to get some take out pastries from the “Madonna Inn Bakery”, including Madonna Inn’s famous Pink Champange Cake (as we are driving to our hotel in Solvang, CA)!

We wanted to sample a few different pastries. We knew we’d be trying a slice of their world famous pink champagne cake, but what else would we get? There were so many delectable offerings. We decided to go with the Black Forest cake with cherries, their butterscotch oatmeal cookies, and of course, their famous pink champagne cake.

Madonna Inn – Butterscotch Oatmeal Cookies

We ordered our desserts for takeaway, planning to sample everything once we arrived at our hotel in Solvang, California. But I couldn’t wait and started to eat the cookies just outside of the Madonna Inn’s Bakery!

The cookies were so good! I would have never thought to have pair butterscotch and oatmeal together, but they go together so well. It’s a beautiful marriage between the two ingredients. It was just wonderful.

Madonna Inn – Black Forest Chocolate Cake

Then we headed back on the road. Once we got to our hotel in Solvang, I sampled the chocolate cake first, which was absolutely delicious. It had all of these distinct tastes. It sort of had a chocolate mousse element to it, then Chocolate cake, and the mos delicious frosting. And when the cherries are very distinct, it was delicious.

Madonna Inn – Pink Champagne Cake

And finally, it was time to sample the famous pink champagne cake. I took, perhaps, too large of a bite.. it was a really big piece!

I Tried Madonna Inn's FAMOUS Champagne Cake!

And it was beyond wonderful! Now I know why it is so famous! Pro tip: be seated or stand near a wall when eating this so that you can brace yourself like I did.

This cake was amazing and the perfect way to start our time in Solvang. If you want to know more about the food and sights of Solvang, California, you can click right here: Solvang, CA… Worth the Trip for Food Lovers?
