Trying Garlic Ice Cream at Garlic World | Gilroy, CA

In Gilroy, California, known as the garlic capital of the world, everything is garlic.

They even have a garlic themed amusement park known as Gilroy Gardens where they have garlic themed rides!

Gilroy basically equals Garlic.

 “So wait a minute… They make garlic ice cream?” I asked. I just couldn’t believe it. “Yes they do” said my husband Chris. I guess when you really think about it, in a town known for everything garlic, garlic ice cream somehow seems to fit right in. “So, do you want to try some garlic ice cream?” he asked again.

Well, I’m always game to try new foods.. especially weird or exotic ones. So I gave a resounding “Yes, of course I do!” I secretly wondered, was the garlic ice cream going to taste disgusting? Surprisingly delicious? Or perhaps be an acquired taste? I guess I’d have to find out for myself.

So, we inquired about the best place to try this garlic ice cream, and we were pointed to a large store called… Garlic World!

Garlic World – Where You Can Buy Garlic Ice Cream & More!

The place is exactly what it sounds like, selling every manner of garlic food imaginable!

Before you enter Garlic World, there is a lot happening. In the front of Garlic World, they have fresh local Gilroy garlic sold by the bulb. They also have garlic braids which are decorative and practical ways to store garlic.

Braiding garlic is an ancient method of preserving garlic after harvest, allowing it to dry and store well. The stems are braided together, keeping the bulbs connected and reducing the rate at which they dry out. They add rustic charm to any kitchen.

Inside they have the freshest produce and of course everything garlic. Then they have a huge selection in the back with garlic salsa, roasted garlic mustard, roasted garlic paste. I bought some of the roasted garlic paste.

It was absolutely delicious. They had Garlic gerkins and all kinds of Garlic spices.

I bought some sweet garlic grill spice and tried it later on some chicken breast. It was absolutely wonderful.

They had garlic mushrooms.

All kinds of garlic aoli, garlic oil, and the world’s longest garlic braid. It comes in at 216 ft!

Here are some more garlic products they offer. They had all manner of pickled garlic. They had Pickled Garlic with Jalapeno, Pickled Garlic Italian Style, Smoked Pickled Garlic, Plain Pickled Garlic, and Spicy Pickled Garlic.

They had California Black Garlic. They had Dried Garlic Chips that they call Garlic Gator Toes and they had them in so many flavors. They had Chili Lime Garlic Gator Toes, Garlic Parmesan Garlic Gator Toes, Loco Spice Garlic Gator Toes, Ranch Garlic Gator Toes, Spicy Garlic Gator Toes, BBQ Garlic Gator Toes

And they had Plain Garlic Chips, which is the one I tried.

They were really great. By the way, I got plain to preserve my pallet for the garlic ice cream!  

Honestly, they had so many other garlic products here that I haven’t named, it was hard to take it all in. But suffice to say, if you are a garlic lover, you will love Garlic World!

Okay, we came for the garlic ice cream and now it was time to try it.

I was a little nervous trying garlic flavored ice cream for the very first time.

The first taste is sweet. it’s definitely an ice cream product that’s also made with sugar. But it’s also definitely garlic flavored! Honestly, more like a subtle after taste of fresh garlic. It’s weird for sure, but it’s not that bad.

You can taste the cream and the sugar and the garlic, but it’s very fresh tasting. If it was a hot summer’s day, I bet most people would slurp it down and be refreshed.

Honestly, I finished the very small container of garlic ice cream. It was July when I tried it, so it was indeed very refreshing on a summer’s day. But I probably wouldn’t buy it in bulk. But truly, it’s not bad. It’s sort of like ice cream with a garlic aftertaste. I don’t know. You have to try it for yourself.
