How To Hard Boil Eggs

Hard Boil Eggs | How To

Hard boiling eggs is such an easy process. The whole thing takes about twenty minutes, but most of that time is not spent actively cooking. You can set a timer and do other things while you wait. You can hard boil many eggs at once or just a few.

We are going to hard boil five eggs today which we will be using in a special recipe. But you can easily hard boil more eggs at one time (notes on this at the end of this blog).

We will start with five large eggs and a large nonstick pot with a lid.

Place all five eggs in the pot pot. Fill the pot with cold water. Cover the eggs by one to two inches with that cold water.

Then place the pot over high heat. Bring the water to a rolling boil. This will take several minutes.

Once the water is boiling, turn the burner off. Then, cover the pot and let the eggs sit for ten to twelve minutes.

After the ten to twelve minutes, have a bowl of cold water with a little ice in it ready to go.

Transfer the eggs into the icy cold water. I find using a skimmer spoon or slotted spoon is the easiest way to do this. Gently lift one or two eggs at a time from the hot pot into the icy cold water until you’ve transferred all the eggs into the cold water.

Allow the eggs to cool. This serves two purposes. The first is this action makes the eggs stop cooking. The second is that it makes the eggs easier to peel. When they are still too hot, it’s difficult on the hands!

Once they are cool enough, then the eggs are ready to be peeled. I use the tap and roll method. I also use what I call the equator method. There are so many methods of effectively peeling an egg, it’s practically an art form on it’s own! The method I use most is the tap and roll method.

Hard Boil Eggs | How To Peel

Lightly tap the hard boiled egg on the corner of a pan or cutting board. Then lightly roll egg on a cutting board or hard surface. The peel should come off easily this way. There are so many ways to peel an egg, this is just one that I like to use often.

And voila, your hard-boiled eggs are ready. We are hard boiling our eggs to use in a wonderful potato salad recipe, which you can view by clicking right her:

NOTE: If you want to hard boil more eggs, it might require more water and the time it takes to reach a roiling boil will probably be longer, but the “cooking” time will be roughly the same. If you are doing more than 10 eggs, raise the “cooking” time (after roiling boil is reached) to 12-15 minutes.
